- Line the base with wet newspaper, add enough garden soil to cover, then some food scraps.
- The farm should be well insulated and put in a shady spot so the worms don't get too hot or cold.
- Feed the worms small amounts of food scraps each day rather than a big load all at once. Citrus and onions can be added to worm farms, but to combat the acidity add a teaspoon of dolomite once a week. Don't add meat as it will attract flies.
- Ensure it can drain, and liquid can flow out of the bottom - worms need to be moist, but they breathe through their skin and can drown in too much water.
- This liquid collected from the bottom of the farm and is a nutritious plant food. Dilute it to the colour of weak tea and apply with a watering can directly on to gardens or potted plants.
- Collect worm castings from the farm to dig into the garden, spread over soil or cover with mulch. Castings can also be mixed with water and applied as a liquid.
