"Dana was seen as a figure of authority on the goldfields,"Dr Beggs-Sunter said.
"My question will always be, 'Why not? Why can't we do better? We don't need to hero-worship murders'."
"I think it's a bit strange. Why pick on Dana? He was just doing his duty as one of the officers sent by the Victorian government to administer the law on the newly evolving goldfield of Ballarat,"she said.
"As per council's Reconciliation Action Plan, if we were to consider any name changes there would be consultation with traditional owners, and we would work closely with the appropriate local Indigenous group."
