The Carbon Budget counts all the emissions that humans produce - the combusting of fossil fuels and deforestation - and subtracts how much of these greenhouse gasses are swallowed by carbon sinks, like the ocean or forests.
What’s left is the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere that ultimately causes climate change.
Researchers then calculate how much is left – the carbon budget - until the atmosphere reaches a CO2 content that would see the world reach a certain level of warming.
It gives them clues about how much time it will take to reach that threshold, and lets them apply different scenarios. One where we continue with business as usual, or one where we drastically lower emissions. The quicker we lower emissions, the more time the world has until it reaches the threshold.
At the current rate of emissions, the team estimates a 50 per cent chance that global warming will go past 1.5C in six years and – in the case we do not change anything – 27 years and until we reach 2C.
