  • Cause of death: The pope died of a stroke and irreversible heart failure, the Vatican's press office said in an official statement.
  • Burial: In his testament, dated June 2022, Francis said he wished to be buried in a "simple" tomb in the ground at Rome's Basilica of Saint Mary Major. He will be the first pope in more than a century to be buried outside the Vatican.
  • People mourn across the world: A rosary prayer was held for Francis at St Peter's Square in Vatican City at 7:30pm, local time. Mass has been held in Catholic churches around the world, including in Francis's hometown in Buenos Aires.
  • Official residence sealed: Vatican employees placed a red ribbon on the door of the pope's residence, tying it shut, before putting a wax seal on the ribbon. This symbolises the formal end of Francis's pontificate.
