- 1.The first slows the water so the sediment in it settles on the bottom
- 2.The second stage is a macrophyte pond where the plants work to remove nutrients. About 40 different species were planted here but about 20-25 species survived, includes ones that have moved in of their own accord. It includes slender knotweed (Persicaria decipiens), a relative of Vietnamese mint that can become a weed but has a pretty pink flower, and trailing pratia (Lobelia pedunculata) a delicate native groundcover with a dainty blue-white flower. Other plants include swamp lily (Crinum asiaticum var. pedunculatum)
- 3.Water is then injected into an underground aquifer before pumped out to the third pond - the balancing storage pond - where it sits until it’s needed for irrigation.
