- Beetroot, like many crops grown for their roots, should always be grown from seed in the soil where you want them.
- Because they have aggregate seeds - seeds that break into several seeds - they also need thinning to around 20cm between plants. Very small plants can be transplanted, but larger thinned seedlings can be added to a salad!
- Soak the seeds for eight hours or overnight to improve the germination rate. When they sink, they're ready to plant!
- Prevent boron deficiency, which is common in beetroot, by adding soluble boron powder to the seeds whilst they're soaking. One teaspoon is more than enough. Please do not use the higher-strength borax, as it's easy to give your beetroot plants boron toxicity! If you don't soak the seeds, you can water them with a teaspoon of soluble boron powder mixed into a bucket or watering can of water.
