- Viburnum tinus or Laurustinus originates from the Mediterranean. It is a fast growing, medium-sized shrub (3.5x3.5m) with tough leathery foliage, and copes with most soil conditions.
- Coprosma 'Evening Glow' - an evergreen shrub that also has tough foliage with a waxy, shiny coating. Different cultivars come in a range of colours. Will grow in full-sun or part-shade, and prefer well-drained soil.
- Westringia 'Wynyabbie Gem' or Native Rosemary has tiny, fine foliage that helps prevent moisture loss. This is an extremely hardy shrub, growing to about 2m. It prefers a sunny spot and can be grown in containers successfully.
- Stachys byzantina or Lamb's Ears comes from the Mediterranean. The softness of the leaves is due to the fine hairs which cover the surface. The hairs act as a wind break to reduce moisture loss.
- Cotyledon orbiculata 'Blue Wave' has a grey, waxy bloom on the foliage to reflect the heat.
