Australia and Asia
Rainforest trees now bred to include a range of sizes
Showy flowers in spring followed by colourful, edible fruit in shades of red, white or pink. Glossy dark-green leaves; new growth is often red, pink or copper-coloured.
Feature tree or shrub, for hedging, or in containers.
Warm or cool-temperate, subtropical, tropical. A sunny or part-shaded position.
Loves rich, slightly moist, well-drained soil but tolerate most soil types if drainage is good.
Seed or from cuttings.
Will only tolerate light frosts. Poor drainage leads to root rot. Fungal diseases include myrtle rust and sooty mould. Sap-sucking insects can be an issue, including spider mites, thrips, aphids and psyllid insects, which burrow into the soft new growth and cause blisters on the leaves. Many new cultivars are being bred to be psyllid resistant.
