Lovage
Levisticum officinale
Eurasia
Herbaceous perennial from 60cm to 2m.
All parts of the plant can be used in cooking. Flowerheads will attract insects.
Use as you would strong flavoured parsley or celery. Seeds can also be used in a hot bath to ease aches and teas as a digestive after a meal.
Cool-temperate to warm-temperate. Likes full sun in cool climates and part sun with protection from afternoon heat in warmer climates. Can also be grown in pots, but allow for the large root system.
Prefers deep, rich soil and requires good drainage.
Seeds or root division.
Can be affected by leaf miners and aphids. Water well for the best flavour and to avoid bitterness.
