- Most plants benefit from stepping up pot sizes in a gradual way. For most, about one-third to half as big again. And while it is tempting to cheat and go bigger, in most cases don’t! Many species will hate sitting in cold wet soil, particularly species like citrus, which is what an oversized pot will hold.
- Soak the plant in a bucket while you prep your new pot.
- Fill it about half-way with high quality mix. You want the finished height to remain the same for the new pot as the old, which you can measure that height using a similar dummy pot to the plant you are potting.
- Slip your plant out and have a squiz at the roots. They might need a prune.
- Position in the pot and back fill.
- Millie also likes to mulch pot plants with gravel, which lets water in but insulates the surface.
- Water in and pop into a sheltered spot for a few weeks, before putting back on display.
