- Carrots need free-draining soil with a small amount of compost. No fertiliser is necessary as this can cause lots of green tops and a tiny taproot.
- Remove any clumps or stones, because if a carrot root comes into contact with this, it will either grow around it or be stunted.
- Always grow from seed, to ensure a healthy taproot. Transferring seedlings disrupts the root’s growth.
- Sow thickly in shallow rows to ensure successful germination - they can be thinned out later.
- Lightly cover and tap down the soil
- Water in straight away, using a light spray so they don’t get washed away. The soil must be kept moist, but not wet.
