- Don't buy all your indoor plants at once. Start with some common varieties and when you have success, you can build on your collection.
- Position, position! Different species require different levels of light. Learn about their needs to find the perfect spot.
- Don't overwater, particularly in the cooler months. Signs of overwatering include brown or yellowing patches, dying leaf tips, or sudden leaf drop. Most species will perform best when the water can drain freely from the potting mix. Jason waters his plants by placing them in the base of the shower and letting them drain. This allows him to also wash dust off the leaves.
- Plants that require constant humidity, such as maidenhair ferns, can be sat in a saucer or sealed pot with approximately 5mm of water in the base.
- Fertilise indoor plants with a slow release fertiliser in spring.
